There are a variety of reasons why you might need to have an accessible bathroom in your home. Perhaps you are looking for options in a bathroom for disabled people, or you may be considering a bathroom for an elderly person living with you.
Whether you have a significant disability, are a wheelchair user or just getting on in years and not quite so mobile as you used to be, there are many options for you to consider when thinking about an adapting your bathroom to accommodate your mobility issues
No matter why you may be thinking about mobility accessible bathroom, this guide may help you to understand all of the options open to you.
When it comes to showering in a mobility accessible bathroom, there are a few different options that you can have installed. They all can help when it comes to mobility issues but have some different benefits that you can keep in mind.
A walk-in shower, which, as the name suggests, is a shower enclosure that is designed to be easily walked into, without a curb and can be quickly and safely used. They are generally larger than traditional showers. You can also have a seat and hand rails installed for additional safety and comfort This is by far the most popular option we see for mobility accessible bathrooms.

Another option choice is a wet room. These work much like a walk in shower, but they are much bigger. They are more accessible and can be a better option for wheelchair users or those people who need help bathing. They are often combined with some of the additional safety features that you will find in a walk in shower such as having a seat and grab rails. Another safety feature that is essential for wet rooms (and walk in showers) is a non slip floor. All of these features reduce the risk of slips and trips whilst you are bathing.

One other option is a walk-in bath. These can be ideal for people with rheumatic issues. They allow the person to walk or step in to them. Additionally for people with significant disabilities walk-in baths can come with a hoist to help lift the person in. However, they take time to fill and empty.

Designing a mobility accessible bathroom means that you need to ensure that the person who is using it is safe. There are lots of different additions that you can make to a bathroom. Grab bars are a must-have, not just in your walk-in shower or wet room but also in areas approaching them. Having a seat in your shower or wet not only increases your safety but also comfort
Another good idea is a non-slip floor, which will also keep them as safe as possible. These could be textured tiles, or, if you want to, a slatted wood tray can be placed over the floor to create a non-slip surface.
You may also want to consider thinking about the water that is used in the bathroom too, which is where anti-scald mixing valves can be a helpful addition to maintaining a safe-water temperature.
Whether you are looking for a walk-in bath, a wet room or a walk-in shower, you can easily create a bathroom for disabled people and for the elderly. All you need to do is think about what is important to keep in mind, and you will be able to plan and create a space that is perfect for everyone in your family to use.
This is true whether they have mobility issues due to old age or a disability, or they can move around the space freely too.
Many people worry that their adaptations will make their bathroom look like a hospital. This is simply not the case. At Parish Bathrooms we design beautiful bathrooms that are not only safe and accessible but are also pleasant places to spend time in and relax
